The doctors on duty at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) have called for ensuring manpower and necessary support to sustain the standard health services at Barishal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital ( SBMCH), specially for Covid-19 treatment properly.

They complained that if the problem is not solved, none of us will be able to get rid of Covid-19, even you are not free from it.

Officials of Barisal Divisional Administration, Health Services Department, Barisal City Corporation and Civil Surgeon’s Office called upon all to work together to reduce the crisis during this crucial moment.

These high-level officials on Sunday noon visited the Sher e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, Barisal General Hospital and gave necessary directions and exchanged views .

Barisal Divisional Commissioner Saiful hasan Badal, Divisional Health Director Dr.Basudeb Kumar Das, Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin Haider and Civil Surgeon Dr. Manwar Hossain, Barisal City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Faruk Hossain were present during visiting two health service institutions.

During their visit they called upon the doctors who are working at the time to speak openly about the problems and crises.

At that time, the Intern Doctors Association president Dr.Sudip Haldar said that at present there are about 200 interns at SBMCH.

As regular examinations, admission and classes are suspended due to pandemic, all of intern are not present, and only few of intern are continuing their duty, he added

Although intern doctors are the main work force of the hospital, but 136 out of 224 intern doctors are attending duty there.

Number of third and 4th class employees at hospital is less than half.

In Corona Ward, huge visitors are coming and going, the disease is spreading from them. If the manpower is not increased, the issue of corona treatment cannot be standardized, Dr. Sudip Halder opined.

The deputy director of the hospital, Dr.Abdur Razzak said, “Although a letter asked us to increase number of accomodations at ICU and corona unit, we requested them to give sufficient manpower.”

There are no specialists and technicians to operate 12 ICU units. Although the entire hospital is full of garbage, as the city corporation is not taking garbage.

Assistant Director SBMCH Dr. Maniruzzaman Shahen said that although there were 150 beds in Corona Ward, but there were 172 patients on Saturday. Even after that pressure, we are preparing 50 more beds . But if we do not increase the manpower, how can we increase the number of bed, he asked.

In this situation if more corona patients would be admitted then the situation may worsens further. As there is no lift in this ward, the patient has to climb the stairs when needed. Patients themselves are coming to the hospital with oxygen cylinders as central oxygen supply was not ensured for all. As a result, the stairs of the hospital became damaged for loading, unloading oxygen cylinders,he added.

The Barisal Divisional Health Director Dr. Basudeb Kumar Das said, “I have never seen such severe situation of diarrhea unit at general hospital under SBMCH in my life.

Already 7,000 people have been infected by diarrhea in 6 districts in the last one month, out of which 4 died in Barisal and 1 in Jhalakathi.

A delegation from ICDDR monitored the situation. If the report sent by them is found, it will be understood what is the cause of this diarrhea. However, since corona is also a symptom of diarrhea, we cannot be sure.

SBMCH director Dr. A. H.M Saiful Islam said that in the last 48 hours, a total of 11 patients have died in the hospital due to corona symptoms.

As a result, 561 patients have died in the corona isolation ward of the hospital and 3,818 patients have been admitted.

He said although we are providing service with less manpower, but it is not possible for long time. So requested the authourity to increase the required manpower and logistical support at any cost immediately.

Divisional Commissioner Saiful hasan Badal said the PWD , Barishal has confirmed that it will be possible to install eight lifts in Corona Ward by next May. Besides, Barishal City Corporation has confirmed that corona waste will be taken from tomorrow.

We have already sent a demand letter to the ministry regarding manpower and other support – I am personally speaking with them hopefully it will be resolved soon, the divisional commissioner added.
